Rioja Vega launches a new wine from a brand new grape variety: Rioja Vega Tempranillo Blanco

May 2014. Rioja Vega launches for the first time ever, not only a brand new wine, but one made from a little known grape variety in the Denomination of Origin Rioja: Rioja Vega Tempranillo Blanco.

Made with grapes from their own vineyards, Rioja Vega Tempranillo Blanco is the result of the relentless research for new expressions of terroir undertaken by Rioja Vega, a key part of a philosophy which has moved this estate forward for over 130 years of history.

At the same time, Rioja Vega remains true to their dynamic differentiation policy by offering wine lovers the possibility to discover a not so common grape variety.

The Tempranillo Blanco or white Tempranillo mutated naturally from the red Tempranillo and was discovered in the vineyards of Rioja in 1988. It was only in 2009, after years of research and testing by the denomination of origin that the new grape variety tempranillo blanco was actually included in the Regulatory Council’s register, an event which had never before taken place since the 1920s when the Denomination of Origin Rioja was founded.

The vines are identical to those of the red Tempranillo variety, with the main difference being the size of the berries which are smaller in the case of the tempranillo blanco, and the color of the skin which shows a greenish yellow color, instead of the usual bluish black.

Kept in few more than four thousand numbered bottles, elegance and finesse, so unconventional as its packaging, are the outstanding virtues of this first 100% Tempranillo Blanco Rioja Vega wine from the 2013 vintage.

Fermeted and aged on its fine lees in French oak barrels for a total period of six months, Rioja Vega Tempranillo Blanco shows a bright deep strawyellow color. The complex nose displays intense aromas of tropical fruits and white flowers over delicate notes of herbs. Unctuous and sweet attack on the mouth which develops into fresh citrus flavors. The texture on the palate is silky from the oak ageing. This complex wine will keep well for many years to come.

Rioja Vega Tempranillo Blanco is perfect as an aperitif, but its food pairing choices invite to day dreaming with memorable special occasions: Lobster, oysters, baked fish…

Founded before the creation of the denomination of origin, Rioja Vega gathers over 130 years of history, experience and dedication in pursuit of the highest quality possible of their wines. This quest for excellence has been awarded with medals and prizes from the most prestigious wine contests worldwide.
