VARIETIES
OF GRAPES
Garnacha:
This type comes from Spain. It covers an area of 22.875 acres: 18% of
the Denominación. This red variety is the most extended in the
world: 825.000 acres (600.000 in Spain). Garnacha is a somewhat rustic
variety, drought resistant and also resistant to some pest like acariose
and oidium.
The wine obtained depends on environmental conditions (thermal integral)
as well as cultivation (production). In warm areas the wine is alcoholic,
not very acid and heavy-bodied, but in the cool areas the product is highly
interesting and balanced.
Garnacha played a very important role in the elaboration of Rioja wines
throughout the 20th century.
