Made
from Tempranillo, Mazuelo and Garnacha grapes.
Picked at their optimal ripeness.
Careful ageing for twelve months in oak casks, followed by at least a
further six months in the bottle. The result is a complex wine, rich in
aromas and flavours. Clean, bright ruby red with aromas of vanilla, toast
and spices. Well-structured, meaty and balanced in the mouth.
VARIETIES
OF GRAPES
Tempranillo:
It is grown on 77.615 acres (61% of D. O. Calificada Rioja); its cultivation
increases to the detriment of other varieties. The grape is native of
Rioja. Tempranillo is safe at curdling, very vulnerable to insect pests,
drought and high temperatures. It produces a balanced grape juice: sugar,
colour and acidity, although the later may be slight sometimes. It has
a frank bouquet, very interesting in young wines and velvety in aged ones.
It is considered the most important variety; in fact it occupies the widest
area in the Denominación.
Mazuelo:
This variety covers 3.5% of the D. O. Calificada
Rioja: 4.535 acres. 550.000 acres are cultivated in the world, from which
517.500 only in France. Its origin is French, it is known under the name
Carignan Noir. This variety is highly productive, but very sensitive to
oidium. It needs more thermal integral than the other varieties. It does
not ripen correctly in cool areas. The grape juice is rich in colour and
acidity, with a hard and slight bouquet. The wines are rich in tannin
and rather rough.
Garnacha:
This type comes from Spain. It covers an area of 22.875 acres: 18% of
the Denominación. This red variety is the most extended in the
world: 825.000 acres (600.000 in Spain). Garnacha is a somewhat rustic
variety, drought resistant and also resistant to some pest like acariose
and oidium. The wine obtained depends on environmental conditions (thermal
integral) as well as cultivation (production). In warm areas the wine
is alcoholic, not very acid and heavy-bodied, but in the cool areas the
product is highly interesting and balanced. Garnacha played a very important
role in the elaboration of Rioja wines throughout the 20th century.
