Rioja Vega is committed to the recovery and revaluation of Maturana Tinta through the production of a limited-production single-varietal wine that reflects the commitment of the century-old winery to the preservation of the region’s wine-growing heritage. A project that rescues historical varieties from oblivion to enrich the diversity and quality of our wines and offer consumers options that combine tradition, exclusivity and uniqueness.
Rioja Vega Maturana 2021 pays tribute to an ancestral variety in Rioja. Its first documented reference dates back to the 17th century, but it gradually became extinct as it was displaced by other more productive grapes. At the end of the 1980s it was rescued from oblivion thanks to a research project on the region’s wine-making heritage. Finally, in 2007, the Control Board approved its cultivation. It currently accounts for 0.43% of the vineyards in Rioja.
In the words of its creator, winemaker Esperanza Elías: ‘Rioja Vega Maturana 2021 is a unique and differentiating proposal for wine enthusiasts interested in recovered native varieties, with a strong regional identity’ and states that ‘it is the option for lovers of freshness and elegance who are looking for wines with personality, versatile and gastronomic’.
The result is a medium-high intensity wine with a garnet-violet colour. On the nose, intense aromas of red fruit and fresh grass with hints of liquorice and eucalyptus stand out from the start. Fresh and velvety on the palate with a complex mineral and spicy aftertaste, also due to the respect for the variety and the contribution of fine tannins from the French oak and the sweeter ones from the American oak. It is persistent in the mouth and lingers with smoothness and delicate balsamic sensations. It is a complex wine, with freshness and potential longevity.
